Top 5 Wednesday: Nostalgic Ships

Top Five Wednesday is a weekly meme created by Lainey @GingerReadsLaineyand she has passed down the torch to Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. For more information and for future topics you can check out the goodreads group.

As it turns out, this weeks theme is a perfect follow up for the “Fandoms I’m No Longer In” I did last week, and I was swiped up once again in feelings of nostalgia towards fandomw I’m no longer obsessively a part of.

1. Sam & Kent from Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver

This is the first couple that came to my mind when I read the prompt for this week. I read Before I Fall back in 2012 I think, and they gave me BUTTERFLIES in my stomach. I was so rooting for them. I think that’s the moment I discovered shipping, before I even knew that such a word existed (that was before I made a tumblr account! Before I Fall will always be a special book to me because of that.

2. Emma and Dexter from One Day by David Nicholls

Em & Dex is another bookish couple I will never get over. I was so obsessed with this book when I first read it – it was one of the first book I read in English and I couldn’t have picked a better one. This book was SO BEAUTIFUL and heartbreaking at the same time. It pretty much defines me in terms of my reading journey. I literally made my whole family climb Arthur’s Seat when we were in Edinburgh just because they did it in the book.

3. Katniss and Peeta from The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins

everlark

I was so obsessed with them back in 2012 when I first got my tumblr account. And besides the whole SHIPPING thing, I just love how they complete each other, and still are there for one another after all they’ve been through – together and separately. They just make sense together in my opinion. Just like their relationship should remain secondary to the whole TAKING DOWN THE GOVERNMENT business that was happening through the trilogy.

4. Clarke and Bellamy from The 100 by Kass Morgan

Okay, this one is a bit of a cheat since I’m very much still in The 100 fandom, but I can say without lying that I’m clearly not as obsessed with it as I used to be during season one and two (which I have both seen at least 5 times I am pretty sure). I did really like Clarke’s relationship with Lexa though, and later with Niylah, and also thought that Bellamy getting together with Echo was totally predictable. But, you know, they’re still canon in the books, so we’re not giving up.

5. Callum and Sephy from Noughts and Crosses by Malorie Blackman

I read this book 10 years ago (feels weird but it’s true!) and it’s another book I will never forget. Their love story was impossible from the start and ended in drastic heartbreaking measures. I will never forget how much I was rooting for them, and how much I cried when it ended. In addition to that, this book is a dystopia and discusses racism, which is probably one of the first book I read on this topic as I was 13 and innocent. I actually never got around finishing this series because my local library didn’t have all the books, but one day I will definitely reread the whol thing, because oh boy it was worth it. And yes I am willing to go through that heartbreak again. I think.

And that’s it for this week, thank you so much for reading, I had a lot of fun making this post! And as usual, feel free to share your Top 5 Nostalgic ships in the comments!

3 Quotes 3 Days | Day 3

And here comes the last day of the 3 Quotes 3 Days Tag! I’m a huge lover of quotes, and it was so much fun to do this and share the love. Once again, thank you Lady Bibliotaph for tagging me!

The rules go as follows:

  1. Thank the wonderful human who nominated you
  2. Post a new quote for three consecutive days
  3. Nominate three new bloggers every day

And for the last day, I decided to share my favourite quote from my favourite book. I have it up on my wall, just above my desk. And in case you didn’t know (because I don’t talk about it enough), my favourite book is One Day by David Nicholls.

“You’re gorgeous, you old hag, and if I could give you just one gift ever for the rest of your life, it would be this. Confidence. It would be the gift of confidence. Either that or a scented candle.”

I just love this quote so much ♥

I already tagged people yesterday and the day before yesterday, so I’m not tagging anyone specifically today, but if you want to do this tag, feel free to do so! I’m tagging you! And I hope you have a wonderful day!

Sunday Recommendations: Tear Jerkers

Hi readers! I can’t believe I haven’t made a recommendations post for tear jerkers already. When I got this idea (after reading If I Stay last week) it just felt like the obvious thing to do. I like my books with a happy ending, but books like that grip all of my feels and never let them go, they are sad but beautiful, and powerful, and I thought it was a great idea to share some tear jerkers in my Sunday Recommendations, so here we go!

*****

The Fault in Our Stars by John Green

The Fault in Our StarsThis seems like the obvious choice for such a theme so I though I would put it first. The main character of this book (in case you don’t know, in which case, where on Earth are you living??) is called Hazel and has lung cancer, and her mother convinces her to go to support group, where she meets Augustus, and she becomes close to him. Augustus is a cancer survivor who lost part of his leg because of it, and his biggest fear is oblivion. And little did Hazel know when she met him that he would change her life…

I cried and cried when I read this book the first time, and the second time too, even though I knew what was coming… You can say what you want, but I loved it.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman

If I StayThis one is one of my most recent read, and when I saw it was on second hand at my local bookstore, I had to get it. I read it in one evening and I got all the feels. I could also tell that the previous owner also cried, so at least I know I’m not the only one… Anyway. If I Stay  is the story of Mia, who is taken to the hospital after getting in a car accident with her family. She is in a coma, but through a ghostly form (I don’t know how else to describe it) she can see everything that happens around her. And soon she realises she will have to choose whether she wants to wake up or not… Telling through flashes between past and present, and memories of her family, best friend and boyfriend, If I Stay is a really beautiful and moving story, something that will definitely make you think about your life, and therefore a must read!

All the bright Places by Jennifer Niven

All the Bright PlacesAnother heartbreaking and beautiful read! I read All the bright places last summer, and I’m so glad I did. All the bright Places is the story of Violet and Finch, and is blurbed as “The story of a girl who learns to live from a boy who wants to die” and I think that is the most perfect way to describe this book. It is the story of Violet, who lost all will to be happy or do anything with her life after her sister died in an accident. On day, on the top of the bell tower at her school, Finch saves her from jumping and they get closer, starting group projects together and spending a lot of time together. But Finch is called a freak at school, because he is different. Sometimes, he is awake. But sometimes, for days, he is not. He will do everything he can to cheer Violet and help her get better. This book was very emotional and amazing ♥ (review)

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

The Book ThiefAnother book you have most likely heard of, since it has been praised a lot. The Book Thief is a historical fiction set in Germany during WWII. Liesel’s parent send her to live in a family in a small town near Munich to protect her, since they are communist and fear they will be arrested. There, she starts with Hans and Rosa, who ask of her that she considers them as parents. While Germany is at war, and the Nazi are all powerful, Liesel becomes friend with Rudy, the boy next door, Max,  the Jew hidden in the basement, and discovers the joys of reading (and stealing) books. Told from the perspective of Death itself, The Book Thief is a unique and amazing story you will never forget. (review)

One Day by David Nicholls

One DayIn case you didn’t know, One Day is my favourite book, and I won’t miss an opportunity to talk about it. One Day is an adult contemporary fiction which tells the story of Dexter and Emma, who meet on the day of their college graduation and spend the night together, right before their life change and they start searching for jobs. The story follows the both of them, one day each year for twenty year, as they grow up, search for love, happiness and stable jobs. It’s a book about following your dreams and doing what your heart wants. I love it and cherish it so much. It is partly a romance, but it is so much more, it is a book about life and human beings, and I could rave about it for hours, but all that matters is that you should read it, even if it might break your heart!

Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins

Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)

This one is a bit different from the others, since it is a sequel, and more precisely the last book in a trilogy (The Hunger Games). Therefore, I won’t do into too much details, only mention than in this last installment, the characters have started a revolution and have to take hard decisions. (And since you are reading this as a part of this least, you will guess that people die, hence the tears, but really, as part of a series mostly based on surviving, that is not a big surprise!)

Looking for Alaska by John Green

Looking for AlaskaAnd last but not least, another John Green book, because it greatly deserves to be part of this list. The main character, Miles, transfers school and arrives in a dorm. His life is transformed as he meets a new group of friends, and becomes fascinating with gorgeous, self-destructive Alaska Young. Between last words and a search for the “Great Perhaps”, Looking for Alaska is an amazing YA novel, which breaks my heart every time I think of it. I don’t really want to say more to avoid spoilers. But if you’ve read it, you know what happens between BEFORE and AFTER and you will understand all the feels…

*****

And that’s it for this week’s recommendations, I really hope you enjoyed! If you have any similar book to recommend please feel free to do so! I know I know, I shouldn’t ask since it will most likely break my heart. But these kind of books are usually powerful, and I often end up loving them despite all the tears!

Also if you haven’t noticed I kind of changed the look of my recommendations since some time in August, and I think it looks better now…

Anyway, that’s all, and I hope you’re all having a great day!

The Ruler of Books Tag

Hi guys! Today I’m here with a tag! I was tagged some time ago by Faebulousbooks to do the Ruler of Books Tag, here is her article if you’d like to check it out!

Since it was originally a Booktube tag, I decided to make a video out of it, but since I was tagged on my blog, of course I am sharing it here as well!

Here is my video:

I thought I would tag a few bloggers as well since it’s a really fun tag so here we go if you want to do it, I’m tagging Jen @ Jen’s Bookish Journey, Reg @ Shelatitude and Diana @ Diana Prince Reviews ! And you if you want to do it!

Have a nice day lovelies ♥

The Desert Island Booktag

Hello readers! It’s been a while since I last did a tag, so here we go! This is the Desert Island Booktag, and I found about it on Jen’s blog aka Jen’s Bookish Journey: you can read her article here!

1/ Water: a book you simply cannot live without

IMG_20150429_090146

I’m going to go with my favourite book, which is One Day by David Nicholls ♥

2/ Food: a book that is a close second on your favorites list

Along for the Ride

Though there are many books that I love, my second favourite is probably Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen.

3/ Shelter: a book that makes you feel at home and safe

IMG_20150828_193515

Without hesitation I have to go with the Harry Potter series, because really, Hogwarts is my home!

4/ Flare gun: a book that you would recommend to a person who doesn’t read

IMG_20160317_125350

Alice’s adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carooll. It’s a classic, an easy read, and an amazing story.

5/ Fire-matches: book that warms your heart

IMG_20160329_112322

Landline by Rainbow Rowell. It’s a more recent read for me, but it was definitely heart-warming. Rowell’s books just work wonders on me ♥

6/ Compass: book that directed you towards your love for reading

IMG_20150420_125305

That’s a tricky one. I have always loved reading. Instead I’m going to pick the book that got me back into reading last year, and that’s Let it Sow by John Green, Maureen Johnson and Lauren Myracle!

And that’s all! I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it! I’m not tagging anyone, but feel free to do it if you want, and comment if you have done it, I would love to read your picks on this!

Sunday Recommendations: Underrated Standalones

This week I have decided to talk about underrated standalones! (by underrated, I mean I don’t see them a lot in the bookish community, and my biased opinion believes we should talk about them more often!) If you havent read them, you should definitely check them out!

While I was writing the article, I realised all the stories were romance, and decided I would go with it anyway… It’s a mix between YA and adult fiction, I hope you enjoy!

One Day by David Nicholls

One Day

Book blurb: Dexter and Emma meet on the day the graduate from college in Edinburgh, and they spend the night together. But they go their separate ways. The story follows them one day each year, for the next twenty year.

It’s sad and beautiful, and my very favourite book. Maybe you have seen the movie, but believe me, the book is much better ♥

Genre: Romance, Adult Fiction

Along for the ride by Sarah Dessen

Along for the Ride

Book blurb: It’s been ages since Auden slept at night, and she likes to spend the night outside. This is her last summer before college and she is going to spend it in another town, with her father. She discovers new things and makes new unexpected friendships…

Okay, I read it a long time ago, and I need to re read it some day. This book has a special place in my heart forever, I found it so beautiful!

Genre: Romance, YA, Summer reading

Us by David Nicholls

Us

Book blurb: Douglas and Connie have been married for about two decades, and are planning a trip around Europe with their 17 year old son Albie, when she tells him she thinks she wanted a divorce. Against all odds, they decide to go on the trip anyway, and don’t tell their son. Douglas secretly hopes the trip will help his wife fall back in love with him, but as expected, the trip doesn’t quite go quite as planned…

This book is brilliant. Clever and moving, and cleverly written… It also has a bunch of interesting twists. And it’s an amazing trip through Europe.

Genre: Adult Fiction, Travel, Romance

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac by Gabrielle Zevin

Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac

Book blurb: When Naomi wakes up in the ambulance, she has lost her memory, and the boy sitting next to her tells her he is her boyfriend. It will turn out he is not. But maybe she will want him to. And she will have to face the person she does not remember being, and all that happened to her in those few years she can’t remember…

Sorry about the shitty summary, I swear it’s better than I made it sound. It’s a light read, and really interesting. Maybe it’s sometimes a bit of a cliché, but it was a really nice story nevertheless!

Genre: YA, Romance, Coming of age

Before I fall by Lauren Oliver

Before I Fall

Book blurb: The story takes place on February 12, also known as Cupid Day, a day where everyone at school sends and gets roses. For popular girl Samantha Kingston, it should be the best day of the year. Except at the end of the day, this time, she dies. But she wakes up again the next morning. Or is it the next day? She has to relive the day of her death, and she has the keys in her hands if she wants to change it…

I heard mixed reviews about this book, but for me it was a total five stars. It was hard to pur down, and gave me butterflies in the stomach, what can I ask more?

Genre: YA, Romance, Coming of age

Mansfield Park by Jane Austen

Mansfield Park

Book blurb: Fanny Price is raised by her uncle and aunt, because her parents don’t have enough money to give her a proper education. But she can feel she is different, and doesn’t really have any ally – except for her cousin Edmund. When her uncle leaves to Antigua, and a pair of wealthy Londoners arrive in the neighborhood, her life changes, and not only for the best…

Okay, maybe that’s a bad summary, but I hope you got the gist of it. It’s a really great and interesting book which deals with society issues and differences. It’s my favourite Jane Austen, and yet it doesn’t seem really popular, which is why I added it here!

Genre: Historical fiction, Romance

The truth about forever by Sarah Dessen

The Truth About Forever

Book blurb: While her (boring and predictable) boyfriend is away at Brain camp, Macy plans on spending the summer working at the library. It’s extremely boring, but she doesn’t mind, and plans on keeping it that way – it’s predictable, and it’s not risky, just how she likes things. But unexpected things start happening, and she ends up getting a job at Wish Catering. She even ends up enjoying it, and starts questioning her choices…

Yes, I know, it’s another Sarah Dessen novel, but it was really good too, and both are not her most famous works, so I decided to include them! It’s a really beautiful story about summer and coming of age, and discovering new things as well as discovering yourself. I loved it!

Genre: Romance, YA, Summer reading, Coming of age

What are your favourite underrated books?

If you have a prompt for one of my next Sunday Recommendations, feel free to ask!

Liebster Award

I was nominated to do the Liebster Award (yet another time, so bear with me!) by The Bookie Monsters, thank you so much!

The rules:

1- Acknowledge the blogger/s that nominated you, and display the award.
2- Answer the 11 questions that the blogger/s gives you.
3- Give 11 facts about yourself.
4- Nominate 5-11 bloggers that you think are deserving of the award.
5- Let the bloggers know that you nominated them.
6- Give them 11 questions to answer.

I think at some point it mentioned it was supposed to be for small blogs, but it seems like it got lost on the way… Anyway.

Facts:

Yes, I know, I’m supposed to share facts about me, but since I have already done this award twice, I’m going to skip it this time. However, you can still check more facts about me here and here!

The questions:

1- What is your favourite book ever?
My answer for this question will forever be ONE DAY by David Nicholls.

2- What is the most important lesson that a book has taught you?
It would probably be something like “never give up on your dreams”.

3- How many books do you own?
I think I own about 300 books, but a lot of them turn out to me mass market paperbacks!

4- Which bookish world would you like to live in for a day?
I would love to go on an adventure with Anya from The Weaver’s Riddle by Claire Marie Lucas!

5- Your favourite book genre?
If YA counts as a genre, then definitely YA, otherwise I read a lot of different things from classics to dystopian to chick lit!

6- Your favourite book quote?
“You’re gorgeous, you old had, and if I could give you one gift ever, it would be this. Confidence. It would be the gift of confidence. Either that or a scented candle.” – One Day

7- Which character would you choose to be your sidekick?
Luna Lovegood! I think we would make a great pair, people say I remind them of her.

8- Any books you regret reading?
That’s a good question. There are a few books I had to read for school a few years ago and really didn’t like, but I don’t really think I regret reading them. I think all books deserve equal chances to be read, and you shouldn’t regret reading a book. You may not like a book, or DNF it, but it’s a bit sad if you regret reading it!

9- What book do you wish had a sequel that didn’t?
Us by David Nicholls! (I swear I’m not doing this on purpose…) I read it over the summer, and I think it would have a lot of potential for a sequel.

10- What is your favourite book review?
I have no idea what I’m supposed to answer to that, but I guess I don’t really have a favourite book review.

11- Your favourite book series?
That’s a hard one. When it comes to “oldies” I absolutely love Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, of course. As for more recent ones, definitely The Hunger Games!

Nominations:

I know I already said that last time I did this award, but I’m not going to nominate anyone since I already did it. However, if you like those questions above, feel free to do them! I have other nominations I have to answer, and I will definitely nominate people this time, I promise!

The Emoji Booktag

I was tagged by One Little Bookshelf to do the Emoji booktag, sorry it took me so long! In this tag, you pair your five most used or recently used emojis with books.

Afficher l'image d'origine

A book that made me smile

Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. It’s such a beautiful story, if you haven’t read it, you should! I recommend it for anyone, really. It’s abook that genuinely made me happy, and I wanted to hug the characters all the time.

Afficher l'image d'origine

A book I loved

One Day, by David Nicholls is my absolute favourite book. It’s just so amazing and beautiful, and yes, heart-wrecking but oh dear, it’s worth all the pain. It’s actually one of the first books I read in English, and it has its place in my heart forever.

A book that made me happyAfficher l'image d'origine

I use a lot of different smiley emojis, so yeah, that was not easy xD For this one, I chose Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, by JK Rowling. It’s another beautiful book, but in a different way. It made me dream, it made me want to have magic too. And seeing how Harry gets to be happy, gets to be himself in this whole new world makes me happy.

A book that made me laughAfficher l'image d'origine

That one was tough, because I tend to express my feelings a lot when I read (aka I laugh out loud a lot and cry my heart out), also there are book that make me both cry and laugh, which would not suit this choice. I eventually went for Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell, because Cath is a bit of a cliché, so she made me laugh, but oh dear, she’s also so relatable. I loved that book so much. Other candidates for this emoji were Us by David Nicholls (but I had already chosen One Day  so I decided to go for another author) and An Abundance of Katherines by John Green which is another amazing book, but I talk about John Green too much!

A book that made me cryAfficher l'image d'origine

Of course I had to go for The Fault in Our Stars here. I read it twice and cried even more the second time. This book was so good and sad and beautiful… But I needn’t explain, you’ve probably read it already, and if you didn’t cry… Do you have a heart?? Other candidates for this mention were Allegiant by Veronica Roth (because that ending, really?) and All the bright places by Jennifer Niven (another book that destroyed me. I totally didn’t expect that ending. That was unfair. And heartbreaking.)

That’s about it, hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it!

I tag:

Red Headed Book Lover

and Elle Biblio

(And whoever wants to do it of course!)
