Top 5 Wednesday: Spring Reads

Top Five Wednesday is a weekly meme created by Lainey @GingerReadsLainey and she has passed down the torch to Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. For more information and for future topics you can check out the goodreads group.

I don’t know if it’s Spring in particular or the change of seasons in general but this topic made me want to talk about contemporary romance books, so here come 5 sweet books that remind me of Spring!

P. S. I like you by Kasie West

This book was such a contemporary I fell in love with it immediately. Am I mentioning in only because I met with Kasie West on Saturday and was reminded of how amazing she is? Maybe. Anyway. It has so many elements I love including the epistolary romance, and, of course, the “enemy to lovers” trope (although enemies is maybe to much here, you see my point). I’m pretty sure it doesn’t take place during Spring, but the sunny cover gives me a Spring-like vibe, ergo it belongs on this list!

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Another of my favourite contemporary novels. Fangirl left such a deep impression on me, probably because of how much I could related to Cath. I will never stop recommending this book, every time one of my friends mentions it it makes me happy and warms my cold heart. As I read it during Spring, it’s also a book that will always be associated with this season in my mind!

Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen

This book. I don’t talk about it enough on here, but I believe that it’s one I’ll never forget. It usually comes up in my list of top 3 favourite books, and I think I read at least 8 years ago. That’s how long I’ve been loving it. And I know it takes place during the summer, but as I said, it’s a sweet contemporary romance, and therefore belongs on my list of Spring reads.

Love, Hate and Other Filters by Samira Ahmed

As I was thinking about what contemporary YA I had been reading in the past year or so, this book came to my mind and I immediately knew that it belonged on the list. Love, Hate and Other Filters was the perfect coming of age novel, it was both sweet and harsh, and I can only recommend it.

Leah on the Offbeat by Becky Albertalli

How could I conclude this list without mentioning a Becky Albertalli book? Leah is the perfect choice to conclude this Top 5 Wednesday. I swooned so much while reading the book, and unlike the others I’m pretty sure it does take place during Spring. It was such a sweet story, with its heartbreaking bits (my heart does break easily, okay) and I just simply loved it so much. I just want to give this book a giant hug, and that’s exactly the vibe I wanted this list to have!

And that’s it for this T5W! Feel free to recommend me whatever book you deem the perfect Spring read, as well as some lovely YA contemporaries, because I’m in the mood to read them all!

Sunday Recommendations: Books at School

For this week I decided to talk about books that are set at school/college. I am still on holidays, but I will eventually have to go back to uni, and I thought it could be a fun idea! I made a selection to have only seven books like usually do, but since I thought of so many books, maybe there will be a part two to this post… Who knows, in the meantime, I hope you enjoy!

*****

The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling

hpOf course, I couldn’t make a post featuring books at school without talking about Hogwarts, the school we all want to attend! Harry Potter was raised by his aunt and uncle after his parents death, but they treat him badly and have him sleep in the cupboard under the stairs. He believes he will live this boring life forever, until one day he receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy, saying he will attend the school, because he is a wizard, and Harry can finally leave his ordinary life… (book talk)

Secrets in Phoenix by Gabriella Lepore

img_20160806_135350Sophie Ballester and her twin brothers Sam and Toad are sent to live with their aunt in the remote town of Phoenix Holt, where they will attend the all-boy boarding school she works at. But something seems weird in this town, and things go even weirder when they find a hidden room in their aunt’s house. Nothing is what is seems in Phoenix Holt, and they will stumble on surprise after surprise… Secrets in Phoenix is a story of witches and hidden magic, featuring another magical school much less famous than Hogwarts! (review)

Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

img_20150426_184926Cath has always done everything with her twin sister Wren. So when Wren decides that she wants to live her own life when they start college, and not share a room with her sister as they always did, Cath is less than happy. Cath is an introvert, she doesn’t like talking to people. All she likes is writing fanfictions about her favourite characters Simon and Baz. And Cath is really good at writing fanfiction. She’s really good at writing love stories though she never lived one in real life… Until now. A great story about what it’s like to start college almost on your own, and to be an introvert!

PS I like you by Kasie West

IMG_20160831_120331This one is a much recent one and I feel like I am mentioning it all the time, but I loved this book so much, it’s absolutely worth it. Lily likes music, and hates chemistry. One day, in Chemistry class, she gets bored and writes some her favourite song lyrics on the desk. The next day, someone replies to her and she starts sending letters to this mysterious penpal, and soon she realises she might be in love with him… PS I like you is a really beautiful story of friendship, love and family, and I definitely recommend it, I promise it’s not as cheesy as it sounds! (review)

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin

img_20150524_102046After going into an accident with her best friend and her brother, Mara Dyer is the only one to survive, with no memory of the incident. Her family decides it would be better if they moved, and she starts a new life in a new school. Except weird things and visions keep happening to her, and Mara can’t figure out what is real and what is not. School heartthrob Noah Shaw takes interest in her, and things get complicated. I have only read the first book in the Mara Dyer trilogy but it’s crazy and incredible and I would most definitely recommend it!

Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins

img_20150501_221137Another amazing contemporary romance. Anna is about to start a perfectly planned senior year with her best friend and the guy she has a crush on, until her father decides she needs to live more experiences and sends her to a boarding school in Paris. There, Anna has to make new friends, live in a dorm full of people who have known one another forever, and live in a completely foreign country. And to her surprise, it’s amazing. I read this book last year, and I couldn’t put it down. It’s really sweet and beautiful and totally not as it sounds in the title ♥

The Beginning of Everything by Robyn Schneider

tbofAnd last but not least another contemporary. Ezra Faulkner has lived an easy life, as a popular, handsome member of the tennis team in high school, until the summer before senior year, when he realises his girlfriend was cheating on him, and the same night, gets into an accident. When school starts again, he doesn’t want to hang out with his old friends, because he feels he wouldn’t fit him anymore. He ends up sharing lunch with his embarrassing childhood friend and his friends who are all members of the debate team. And the weird, mysterious new girl, Cassidy Thorpe, who decides it is her job to take him on adventures. The Beginning of Everything is a wonderful coming of age story, about friendship and first love, and growing up and life. And that’s my selection for this week! Thanks for reading if you stayed until now, and I hope you enjoyed. Please feel free to recommend more similar books in the comment, or talk about those as I always love discussing books with y’all! Have a great Sunday!

PS: I like you – My Review

IMG_20160831_120331

I received PS: I like you by Kasie West in the August Owlcrate, and I’m so thankful I did because otherwise I don’t know if I would have read this book, and I would definitely have been missing out… I read it in one night and I asbolutely loved it!

Publication: August 2016
Genre: YA, Contemporary, Romance
My rating: ★★★★★

The story:

Lily is bored in Chemistry class, and one day she writes some of her favourite song lyrics on the table. The next day, someone replied. She is surprised, and replies back. Follows a very long exchange of letters ducked under the table with her mysterious penpal. At first, she doesn’t want to know who he is. But slowly, she realises she might be falling for this guy, who opened his heart to her through those letters, and things get complicated…

My opinion:

First thing I knew when I had the book in my hands is that I would fall in love with this guy, and oh boy, yes I did. I know this is not the best summary, but trust me, this book was amazing. I didn’t start it with high expectations, because it seemed a bit of a cliché YA romance, and maybe it was, but I believe there was more to it. This is also a story about frienship and family, and I really enjoyed it.

Lily is a rather unique character, she stands out, she likes music, and she is also an introvert, and I could really relate to this. This book not only explores her relationship with her mysterious paypal, but also her relationship with her family – who is not an easy one to live with on a daily basis – and her best friend. Lily’s life is made of ups and downs, it’s relatable, and she is a really fun narrator.

As for her mysterious penpal, I am not going to tell you who he is, because it would be a major spoiler (I am dying to talk about him though… Please tell me what you think if you read this book…). But the person we get to know through those letters is a funny and admirable person, with qualities and flaws, of course. And I really enjoyed how he and Lily built their relationships through those letters. In a way, it is exactly the kind of thing Lily needed and it’s wonderful (and also extremely romantic, just thinking about this book makes my heart melt).

img_20160908_111348

And I haven’t even mentioned that my copy is signed, and also has a letter from the author, what am I even doing? I absolutely loved the letter, honestly, I think it made the book even better.

Through this book, Lily got to open to new people, and I think it’s really great. We can really see a character evolution thoughout the story, and it’s something I really like in books (or TV shows, or anything really). She gets to talk to new people, she opens to this mysterious guy through their letters, and her relationship with her best friend also evolves, with trust and quirks. I really loved it (yes I know I keep saying this).

Overall, this was my first Kasie West book, and I feel like I have definitely been missing out. This book was cute, light and funny. It was also moving and relatable. Once again, I realised how much I loved contemporaries. I definitely need to check out her other books.

This book has definitely made it to my top 10 books of 2016 list. I also talk about it in one of my recent videos here!

What else can I say? I loved this book so much, and if you are looking for a quick read, which will make you swoon, then you should definitely check this out. If you like romance and cute contemporaries, then this is definitely the thing for you.

Thanks for reading, and if you have read PS: I like you I would love if you shared your thoughts in the comments!

September TBR

IMG_20160902_112735

I didn’t respect my TBR in August, and this is actually what happens most of the time, but for some reason I feel like this time I could actually respect it. Anyway, I love making TBR posts, and it would feel weird not to make one, even if I don’t respect it in the end. (Also, I’m rather proud of this pictures, but whatever, here we go!)

Currently reading:
Al the Lights we cannot see by Anthony Doerr
The Rose and the Dagger by Renee Ahdieh

Pictured:
A Storm of Swords by George R.R. Martin
The Shadow Queen by C.J. Redwyne
If I Stay by Gayle Forman
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell

I already read:
PS: I like you by Kasie West (and OMG it was awesome but I will talk about it later!)

Not pictured:
Cress by Marissa Meyer
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

As usual, I am also trying to get around the books on my currently reading shelf on Goodreads, and if I could make some progress on Swann’s Way by Marcel Proust, which is a French classic, it would be totally awesome. I also have some titles piling up on my NetGalley shelves, and at the moment I am trying to get around The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker.

And I guess that’s it for my TBR, have a great reading month!

August Owlcrate Unboxing!

P1050095.JPG

Hi everyone! So for the first time, I ordered a bookish subscription box, and I am delighted by its contents. I have filmed a video of my unboxing, and I also have a bunch of pictures I wanted to share, so here’s everything.

necklace: Owlcrate special item

IMG_20160830_102654.jpg

The pins are from my Owlcrate box, the 9 3/4 necklace however was sent to me by WandWitchAndWizard on Etsy!

IMG_20160831_120331

And this is the book by Kasie West! I can’t wait to read it, it looks amazing ~

As you can see below, I also started using the colouring book, which I like a lot!

You can follow me on Bookstagram @Clemireads and on Snapchat @Clemichan for more updates like those!

Overall, I am over the Moon. I absolutely loved everything in this box. I had been eying Owlcrate for a while, but didn’t order a box because of the shipping. But since I got some little jobs over the summer, I decided I could treat myself just once, and I’m so glad I did! This was the perfect theme for me too, I’m so glad I got this one.

Did any of you receive this box as well? What did you think?

I won’t order a box next month, and I’m trying to take a break from buying things actually. But if I get money at my birthday/Christmas I will definitely consider ordering another box!

Also if you receive other subscription boxes, feel free to recommend them, and have a nice day!
